Every job starts with the base nobody sees — compaction, drainage, edge restraint. That is the part that decides whether a patio still looks like this in ten years.
A paver surface is only as good as what is under it. We excavate to subgrade, build and compact a processed-gravel base, screed the bedding course, then set and vibrate the field so nothing settles unevenly later..

Natural stone is not modular, so it cannot be laid by pattern alone. Large-format bluestone gets dry-laid tight on a compacted base with sawn edges meeting in a clean joint.

A retaining wall fails for one of two reasons: no drainage behind it, or no base under it. We build a compacted footing below frost depth, backfill with clean crushed stone, and run drainage so water leaves the wall instead of pushing on it..

A fire feature changes how long the season lasts. We build wood-burning and gas fire pits as a proper structure — compacted base, block core, stone or paver face, steel insert where the fuel calls for it — set into the patio field rather than dropped on top of it..

Water is what destroys hardscape on the Cape. Before anything decorative goes in, we look at where the water actually goes — off the roof, down the drive, across the grade — and size the drainage for it.

A pool surround has requirements a patio does not: it has to stay cool underfoot, drain away from the water, and hold a non-slip surface when wet. Travertine does all three, which is why most of ours are travertine — tumbled, set tight, coped at the edge..

Material matters
Cape Cod has a stone vocabulary of its own — weathered granite, bluestone, fieldstone pulled out of the same ground the house sits on. We work in it because it belongs here, and because it outlasts everything that imitates it.
Sand-set, hand-cut around curves, joints swept and locked. No two runs identical, which is the point.
